Faceplate privacy policy
The short version
- Your images, your video and anything you type into a template stay on your computer.
- Faceplate has no server, no account for the free version, no analytics and no crash reporting.
- Until you click Get Pro or Restore Purchase, the extension contacts no one.
- Pro is sold through ExtensionPay and Stripe. After you click Get Pro or Restore Purchase, the extension sends a random key to ExtensionPay to check your subscription, and nothing else.
What stays on your computer
- The overlay images you upload; the templates you make, including the name, title and colors you type into them; and, on Pro, a logo you upload. These live in the extension's own storage in Chrome.
- Your settings: whether the overlay is on, its opacity and position, how the library is shown, and what the extension last learned about your subscription.
- Your video. Faceplate draws the overlay onto each camera frame inside the Google Meet page, in memory, and hands the result to Meet. It doesn't record anything, keep any frame, or send video anywhere Meet wasn't already sending it. Your microphone isn't touched at all.
- The extension never asks for camera permission of its own. Google Meet asks for your camera as usual.
The one thing that leaves your computer
When you click Get Pro or Restore Purchase, the extension creates a random key, a string of letters and numbers with nothing personal in it, and keeps it in Chrome's extension storage. Chrome may sync that key to the other computers where you are signed in, as it does with other extensions' settings, so your Pro access follows you.
From then on the extension sends that key to extensionpay.com to ask one question: has this key paid? It asks when a Meet tab opens, when you come back to a Meet tab, when you open Faceplate from the toolbar, when Chrome starts the extension, and every few seconds for a few minutes after you open the checkout, account or restore page. The request carries the key and the extension's name. Like any web request, it also shows ExtensionPay your IP address. ExtensionPay's answer says whether you have paid, your plan and its status, and the email you paid with. The extension keeps the payment status and doesn't store the email.
If you never click Get Pro or Restore Purchase, none of this happens.
Buying Pro
Pro is a subscription sold through ExtensionPay, a payment service for browser extensions, with payments processed by Stripe.
- You enter your email on ExtensionPay's page and your card on Stripe's checkout page. The extension never sees your card.
- ExtensionPay keeps your email so it can tie your subscription to your key and let you restore your purchase on another computer by emailing you a link. ExtensionPay says it stores no card details, keeps only your email as identifying information, runs analytics only on its own site, and never sells or gives away data (extensionpay.com).
- Stripe holds your card and your subscription under its own privacy policy: stripe.com/privacy.
- We can see the email and payment records of people who have bought Pro, in ExtensionPay's and Stripe's dashboards, to handle refunds and support. We don't use them for anything else, share them with anyone, or send marketing.
- Cancelling and refunds are covered in the terms and the refund policy.
Restoring a purchase
Restore Purchase opens ExtensionPay's page, where you enter the email you paid with. ExtensionPay emails you a link; opening it ties your subscription to this computer's key.
Deleting your data
- Removing the extension from Chrome deletes everything it stored on your computer. If Chrome had synced the key to your Google account, Chrome treats it like any other extension setting; the key is a random string that identifies nothing on its own.
- To have your email and payment records deleted from ExtensionPay and Stripe, email support@faceplateapp.com. We will delete what we hold and ask ExtensionPay and Stripe to delete the rest. An active subscription has to be cancelled first.
What we don't do
- No analytics, telemetry or crash reporting.
- No account or login for the free version.
- No remote code: everything the extension runs is in the package you install from the Chrome Web Store.
- No selling or sharing of data. There's nothing to sell.
- No content moderation: your images never reach us, so we can't see them.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version goes on this page with a new date.
